Traditionally, every four years the leading mathematicians gather for one of the major scientific evens - the  International Congress of Mathematicians.

This year the congress took place in the capital of South Korea, Seoul, and was attended by more than 4 thousand participants from more than 120 countries. Among them - ex and current members of out department - Yury Nikolayevsky (La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia) and Kostiantyn Drach.

Except from plenary talks in more than 15 scientific fields, during each congress the "Nobel prize" of the mathematical world - the Fields Medal - is awarded. This medal represents recognition of achivements for a professional mathematician. It is awarded to no more than 4 young scientists not older than 40 years. The medal and the money prize are assigned during the opening ceremony of the congress after which all laureats give public lectures on their mathematical reserch.

(So far) the only Ukrainian laureat of this prestigious award is Volodymyr Drinfeld. He received the medal in 1990 during the congress in Kioto (Japan).

This year the Fileds Medal was given to:

Artur Avila (IMPA, Brazil) «for his profound contributions to dynamical systems theory, which have changed the face of the field, using the powerful idea of renormalization as a unifying principle»

Manjul Bhargava (Princeton, USA) «for developing powerful new methods in the geometry of numbers, which he applied to count rings of small rank and to bound the average rank of elliptic curves»

Martin Hairer (University of Warwick, UK)

«for his outstanding contributions to the theory of stochastic partial differential equations, and in particular for the creation of a theory of regularity structures for such equations»

Maryam Mirzakhani
(Stanford University, USA)

«for her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces»

Maryam became the first woman Fields medalist!

Besides that, several other awards (such as Gauss Prize, Chern Medal, Nevanlinna Prize) were given, lots of exhibitions and outreach activities took place. The total audience of the congress' visitors was more than 25 thousand people!

The next congress will be in August, 2018 in Rio-de-Janeiro (Brazil). See you in Rio!
